Somos Novios

KatFanSinceDay1 from katharinefans.com recap

I was lucky enough to attend the concert in L.A. last night and she did fantastic.

David Foster was kind of the MC, even though Dr. Phil was actually the host. In any case, David introduced her by saying "Sometimes it's better to come in second, and this girl will show you why..."

She came out atop a huge staircase in a flowing gown and descended while singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." She seemed to do the song a little differently, made it her own a little more, especially toward the end. It was great. The crowd went nuts and was screaming for her through the entire song.

Then Andrea Bocelli joined her on stage for "Somos Novios," also great.

Later on, the rookie QB of the Arizona Cardinals was onstage and Dr. Phil asked him who his favorite band was. His response? "Actually, I'm a huge fan of Katharine McPhee. I love American Idol." They were going to then force him to sing and he begged to get her back on stage with him, but she was on a plane to NY already (Editor note: Not true, as confirmed by Dremomma) so they had a girl from the audience go up there with him.

I feel great about Kat's future success after seeing the reactions to her last night.

I know. I was so angry she didn't get to come back out and sing with him! Because as soon as the Quarterback (forgot his name, he just graduated from USC and was drafted) said her name, the crowd went NUTS. Then it was a bit of a letdown when she couldn't come. They must keep her busy.

Oh, by the way, she got a standing ovation for "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." And that's something that not all the acts last night got. She was flawless.

I hoped it would be "The Prayer" too.

Oh and for someone else that mentioned her releasing that version of SOTR, it's VERY similar to the one she recorded on the single, if you've heard it. It was leaked a few days ago. The end is just fantastic, and different from what she's done before.

Oh and one other little piece of info (it's coming back to me slowly this early in the morning, sorry!).

At the beginning of the show, Dr. Phil and Robin (his wife) were announcing the acts who would be performing (all of which were in the program). Kat was NOT in the program (I assume they were printed before David Foster decided to add her to the billing) but they mentioned everyone from the program and then said "And a very special surprise guest."

After seeing the whole thing, I can only assume that special surprise guest was her.

Actually, David had said earlier in the show (before Andrea came out) that they needed to hurry things along because he had a plane to catch. I wonder if they will be performing together? (Note: No, they're not.)

Is David Foster orchestrating Kat's career? Will he produce her album? (Note:  David already has Kat under one of his giant wings .)

You guys are going to love this when it goes on air August 22. Our girl is so expressive when she sings, both with her facial expressions and voice. She's incredible. But, hey, I'm preaching to the choir.

Her mom, dad, and sister were there as well. They really do support their daughter. It's great to see.

Dremomma (Diane) AI and katharinefans.com recap

Wow, great review from Katfansinceday1. I don't know what to add, except some behind the scenes tidbits. First off, we were in our seats by 7:45 and someone in our party got a text message from Kat that she had just landed and was still enroute to the Shrine Auditorium. There was a delay in Boston and she was three hours late! Not to be frazzeled though, she was the third artist on the show, and was absolutely stunning and poised. Her entrance, ascending 20 feet, on a very steep staircase, in a gorgeous handmade pink silk dress was dramatic. I was sitting next to her mom and we were both holding each other's arms. It was quite a moment. She was incredible on OTR, a new arrangement by David Foster. She received a standing ovation. Her mom said it was her best performance of that song, (her mike was turned way down at the Bowl).  Andrea joined her and they sang Somos Novios. They are a charismatic duo. Just amazing. Another standing ovation and she was gone. He did one more song, his 2006 Olympics 'beauty.' TBC

The show went really long, and having seen the best in the first 45 minutes, we were anxious for it to be over. But probably not as much as Katharine, who had rehearsal Tuesday morning, flew to Boston late afternoon, sang for the ship christening and flew back to L.A. in less than 24 hours. After her performance, she did 2 hours of press backstage! When we talked to her afterwards, she was starving and tired and very excited to have today "Off." No big after-party. She did not go back to NY last night.

She had photoshoots and press interviews daily, but today is a day off, the first since the show ended. Rehearsals for the tour continue next week.

The arrangements had a few changes, primarily the ending though.

No Christina (Aguilera), no Sting (only on video). No Mary J.

Who were on hand: Martina McBride (really good, BYW) doing "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." Latin Grammy winner Alejando Sanz, John Legend, Kenny Chesney (last performer), 3 Doors Down doing "Kryptonite" (sp.) with Sara Evans doing one of their other hits with them.

And Andrea did "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You." Awesome.

They were taped segments (Christina and Sting) talking about kids and the afterschool programs that the benefit was for. A very cute moment was when David asked Andrea what he was like as a young boy...His reply: "I was a very naughty boy!"
